This book is pure art. The story is magnificent and the characters are breathtaking. The story spans from the turn of the century to present day New York, though it's New York like I've never read it. Helprin has such a deep love for the city, that's it's almost impossible not to be caught up in his passion. I won't give anything about the plot away, but you will be mesmerized by it.
