After five or six years of using a Linux desktop, Manjaro Gnome to be exact, I have to sadly concede that Apple has won me back. I was looking to upgrade my desktop and laptop, after a few years, so when a handed down M1 MacBook Air hit my lap this spring, it turned this hardcore Linux user, back into a Mac user. It's the software, I mean the machine is perfect physically, but the software is sublime. I immediately ordered a Mac Mini M4 loaded for like $1000, and the new (to me) M1 laptop, upgrades complete.
I am a web developer who was perfectly happy with my needs met by Linux. I don't game. I run a VM or two, nothing that major.
Hibernation/sleep was always tricky on Linux. I turn my PC off at night while the Mac Mini sleeps effortlessly, hardly using anything for power. This was not terrible, but annoying. I know, I should have scoured the internet or AI for a solution, but why? Software will be written by software soon, so what's the difference? At least Apple has a material interest in keeping my data safe and secure.
Integration is what Apple has. Plain and simple integration and organization, built an architecture that makes modern life almost effortless.
Am I selling my soul for near effortless data flow? Yes, yes I am.
